1.3 ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

 
The University offers seven graduate programmes, nine postgraduate programmes in 43 disciplines and doctoral programmes in Agriculture, Horticulture, Home Science (FS&N), Co-operation & Banking and Veterinary & Animal Sciences covering 23 disciplines. The various degree programmes offered by the University are given in  Table 2.

From 1986 onwards semester system with external evaluation is being followed for Agriculture, Fisheries and Agricultural. Engineering faculties while Veterinary and Animal Sciences faculty is following the system recommended by the Veterinary Council of India for graduate programmes.  Unlike the UG programmes, the evaluation  in PG courses is by the course teachers. The students and staff position in different colleges are indicated graphically.

Among the five faculties  the University offers graduate and post-graduate programmes at Masters as well as Doctoral levels, in almost all the disciplines and specialties on various subjects related to agriculture. The basic science faculty is not currently offering any courses and the teachers of this faculty are deployed in the other four faculties.

The seven under graduate programmes offered include

  • Agriculture , Forestry , Co-operation and Banking

  • Veterinary and Animal Sciences , Dairy Science and Technology

  • Fisheries and Agricultural Engineering and Technology. 

In 43 disciplines, the University offers nine post-graduate programmes leading to Masters’ degree in

  • Agriculture , Horticulture , Forestry, Agricultural Statistics , Co-operation and Banking , Home Science (Food and Nutrition), Veterinary and Animal Sciences , Fisheries and Agricultural Engineering and Technology. 

Doctoral programmes are offered covering 23 disciplines in

  • Agriculture , Horticulture , Home Science (Food and Nutrition) ,

  • Co-operation and Banking, and Veterinary and Animal Sciences

The annual intake capacity is indicated in Table 3.  The intake capacity for BSc. (Ag) increased by more than five times over  1955 and in Veterinary Science by 1.5 times.

The University has built up the capacity and facilities to train annually 700 students of which 425 are graduates, 215 Masters and 65 Doctorates. On an average, the University has around 2000 students on its rolls, of which girl students constitute nearly 60 per cent. The University has been providing professional education AND in the year 2000, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research adjudged the KAU as the second best performing University among the 35 State Agricultural Universities and Deemed Universities in this country.
